trick or tweet

MLS decided they’d have a pumpkin carving contest this year. “Oh, really?” I said, and got out the tools.

Then I burned out the motor on my Dremel carving all the shading on this sucker. It’s Diego Fagundez, in motion.

Then I decided to do another, just emphasizing the mohawk.

Then I not only didn’t win, they told me they never got my Twitter-submitted entries. Bah!

Since MLS wouldn’t offer a proper reward, I obviously took my talents to Norway, where I did this Aalesunds logo in honor of their Cup final appearance on 11/5. Lykke til!

But ultimately, it’s country over club, all day every day, so here’s Megan Rapinoe with her tongue out, even though it looks like a goatee.

benny and bamboo

This spring, over the weekend when it was being determined what MLS club would land Benny Feilhaber, it looked for a few minutes like Chivas would be his destination, to the delight of my SoCal based-pal Bamboo. Sure, she’s a Galaxy fan, but just the idea of him being around town was enough.

Of course, Benny wound up in Boston.

Shortly thereafter, the Revs hosted a meet and greet with their allocation prize, so I dutifully sent Bamboo the above unflattering photo of myself with Benny just to make her jealous. I kept this up all season long, teasing her when he turned up on local magazine covers, at Meet the Revs, or at the Portland Mexican Independence Day party.

Meanwhile, Mike and I had a trick up our sleeves. At Meet the Revs this year, the stupid question we got Benny to answer on video was “tell our friend Bamboo how much you love her, like we’re holding a gun to your head.”

“Her name’s Bamboo?” he said.
“Yeah, just go with it.”
“Hi, Bamboo, you’re awesome, I love you, uh…what?”
“Like we’re holding you at gunpoint.”
“What? That’s terrible.”
“You’re a horrible actor.”

He’d derailed the joke, of course, but managed to take it in a better direction.

Shortly after we got the video, we found ourselves with a cache of US Soccer warmup jackets. “We should send one to Bamboo,” Mike said. “Get it autographed by Benny, even!”

One week before the season ended, I remembered to take the jacket to a game and got it signed. The next day, Bamboo was watching an NFL game and wondered aloud on Twitter where could she find one of those pink do-rags that the players were wearing in support of breast cancer awareness. As it happened, I had a spare pink do-rag that the Breakers had given away at their breast cancer support game. “Send me your address and I’ll send it to you,” I said, delighted that I had an excuse to ask for her mailing info. Mike put the video clip on a thumb drive, and I wrapped the jacket and the local magazines I’d been hoarding with a tag that said “WATCH THUMB DRIVE BEFORE OPENING.” Threw ’em in a box with the do-rag and sent ’em off across country.

A few days later, I got this:

bamboo do
his signature’s under her right ponytail

“OH. MY. GOD. There are no words in my vocabulary that describe a) how I feel right now and b) how thankful/appreciative I am c) how much I love you and d) how much I am FREAKING THE FUCK OUT. I am like, THIS close to crying, y’all. You are both truly amazing. I can’t even find the words to thank you. Oh fuckit, I’m totally crying. And still freaking the fuck out. I had a breakdown for like, 20 minutes when I popped in that flash drive, and another breakdown when I opened the package. It means so much to me that you thought of me, and seriously, it pretty much made my year. So thank you. I am incredibly touched. Also, the magazines are a nice touch. Benny can do no wrong. (I can’t believe there’s a magazine called the Improper Bostonian!)

“I was also pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to assemble a do-rag, even though I don’t rock it with the same finesse as some of the athletes out there. ”

Even in an otherwise ghastly year, I can always find a reason to keep doing what I do.

how to travel near a salmon street

Ever since the Timbers officially joined MLS as an expansion team, the American soccer community’s fallen all over itself to go on and on about how great the Portland fans are and how perfect their gameday setup is. I knew I had to see for myself if things lived up to the hype, not least because Portland’s where our pal, freewheelin’ stealin’ healin’ Mr. Mystic of the Goal himself, Adin Brown landed after leaving Norway. You know what this means: a self-indulgent recap of an ill-advised vacation! Follow along with the photos and join the fun.

rise and shine

Like everyone else vaguely connected to American soccer, my twitter feed this summer filled up with requests for donations to help fund Rise and Shine, an independent documentary about Jay DeMerit totally copying the much more handsome Jimmy Conrad coming from nowhere to walk on to the World Cup team. Got in touch with the guys behind the film, and asked if I could contribute a banner for them to auction or what have you.

RISE AND SHINE, 5×5

This was much more of a bear than it looks, largely because DeMerit’s not as photogenic, at least in US kit, as I’d like–since he’s a defender, there are comparatively few photos of him looking all inspiring by himself out in the field. So I ditched the original “inspirational” idea I had and went for silly, re-imagining the title of the film as Regis & Kelly style morning chat show.

Finished product is apparently going to be used on roadshows/film festival circuit as a display, which I’m totally cool with.

official statement re: how I spent the revs/chicago game, 6/18/11

Went to the game by myself, chatted about hockey for a bit, had a sandwich out in the parking lot beforehand. Hung the banners. Took usual spot front row center of Fort. Watched the first half. Second half, little after the equalizer, I notice the chants stopped and people were either walking out or sitting down. I stood and watched the rest of the game. Postgame, put away the banners, congratulated Jon Conway on continuing to sport a molestache, got in my car, drove home.

I have no further comment on anything else that went on, team, supporters’ group, or otherwise, except to say Ryan Guy looked pretty snazzy. Please don’t ask.

oh my corazon

Spanish national team coming right through your backyard, what to do?

CORAZON, 5’x6′

Make a banner combining random elements of tattoo artwork and Joe Strummer’s terrible Spanglish from my very favorite Clash song. 13 stars for 13 colonies, yellow roses for the gold highlights in the US Soccer palette, and Indivisible for the fact that you can’t divide by zero goals scored the motto the US is pushing this year. Done in about 20 hours using paint on wet canvas, which led to some really cool musculature effects in the heart as everything dried. Will live on my dining room wall when not in use, because I love love love all the color.

Te quiero infinito.

always believe

In January, all-time Breakers and USWNT star Kristine Lilly announced her retirement, much to the surprise of the soccer community, who always figured she was a Highlander and could not retire by conventional means. Here’s a player who, in her last national team appearance, lined up alongside players who weren’t even born when she got her first cap. If she’s not the greatest women’s soccer player ever, she’s in your top three or I’m not listening to you. So imagine how great an honor and how cool a project it was to get word from the Breakers that they wanted me to design a poster to give away to fans at her retirement ceremony.

ALWAYS BELIEVE, 5′ x 7′

Initially, the caption was to be “immortal,” since that’s the first thing I think when I think Kristine Lilly. But when I sent the final draft for approval, they came back with one edit–could I possibly change it to “Always Believe,” her personal motto? Sure could. Overall concept for the piece was “a wave of thirteen stars,” wave as in Breakers and 13 as in her longtime jersey number. The dark blue’s the official Breakers color; the red’s the current shade used in US Soccer’s palette. Light blue is just dark blue at half strength, as the Breakers only have one official color.

The Breakers gave out 2500 mini-posters and put a larger autographed litho version up for sale; I went ahead and painted it to give to Lilly herself.

lilly holds her banner

No matter how many of these I do, I’m still blown away when players get my pieces. I’m as honored to have done this project as I am to have seen Lilly play, even if I came in too late for the class of 99. Thanks to Andy Crossley for setting this all in motion, and thanks to Lilly herself for, well, always believing.

are you looking for the motherlode?

I’ve seen teams around the league swiping band logos for banners, though it’s always bugged me how they never seem to capitalize on their local music scene. Besides the fact that their “WHERE EAGLES DARE” banner always makes me want to stand on the opposite side of RFK with one reading “I AIN’T NO GODDAMNED SON OF A BITCH,” I’ve seen Rolling Stones lips (a common South American tifo theme) at DC United games, but don’t remember anything making use of the rich vein of DC Hardcore. I mean, surely someone’s thought to appropriate the first Bad Brains album cover? I’ve also seen Portland fans using Black Flag bars, though considering their local music scene inflicted the Decemberists upon us, I’ll excuse it.

PIXIES, 5’x5′

So I put my money where my mouth is, took some inspiration from one of New England’s best ever musical products, and turned the Pixies logo into a Revs one. The slightly off-center text is gonna haunt me–no, my child, that was not my desire.

leftover words

Yup, still going with the words project, started in 2008.

Marko Perovic, “Lift.” Because “Serb” would be too on-the-nose. Painted this last season but didn’t get around to posting it until now.

Darrius Barnes, “Smooth.” Yes, this is the third time I’ve repainted this. No, I don’t know how I keep losing them.

Kevin Alston, “Fresh.” Third repaint on this. Man, I spend a lot of time looking at players’ nostrils.

don’t mess with deuce

Commission request from someone in central PA who wanted to celebrate US Soccer’s current most popular Texan besides Stuart Holden:

DON’T MESS WITH DEUCE, 7’x5′

Wish the text and Texas weren’t so close together, but other than that, pretty happy with it. Made in time for the US-Argentina game in March. Gold star is over Clint’s hometown. As a Revs fan, I never, ever get tired of watching him and thinking, man, I knew him when.
