Help the Vuvuzebra

Second in a series of James Montgomery Flagg swipes. This one was painted for the US-Costa Rica game, and was given to US Soccer postgame. The Vuvuzebra’s a running joke from the summer’s Confederations Cup, and was a lot of fun to paint. That fabric was originally white, too; I had to dye it beige to get the right antique look.

However, the original has Uncle Sam with a horse, leading to an odd proportion problem–zebras are smaller than horses, so either this is a huge zebra, or Uncle Sam’s awfully short. I decided to split the difference and use Steve Cherundolo as the face model for Sam.
