Tag, you’re it

Speaking of stupid fan tricks, let me tell you a bit about the image below. The concept was to come up with a new banner for the 2005 MLS season, but something a bit different than the professionally done (read: “vinyl’) efforts in The Fort, or the mildy-amusing/mildly-creative player worship banners ordinarily seen displayed below a group of pre-pubescent girls.

I had wanted to do something with more of an adult theme, but also something with some foothold in pop culture… and for some time I’d been impressed and otherwise inspired by the characters in the “band” known as Gorillaz:

An image of Gorrilaz

It was long before I found an image I liked on the back of a Gorillaz CD, and incoporated that into the design concept, which had a young many “tagging” the words “New England” and “Viva La Revolution” below it. Well, that eventually evolved into the end design, which turned out to include two characters, who were ultimately done as representations of New England Revolution players Steve Ralston and Clint Dempsey.

The concept and the final effort.

The final banner ended up being made of simple house-paint on heavy cotton canvas, and was approximately 5′ x 25′ long. Ultra Peanut did the hemming, while also putting on the hanging straps.

All in all I think it turned out quite well.

LA Riot Squad and the Chivas Girls

For the Chivas/Galaxy match on July 16, the LA Riot Squad decided they’d show their appreciation for the ChivaGirls. This video got most of the highlights.

You have to get up early to be this geeky. This really is me touching up Patrick’s uniform before work one morning.

Ramones

Designed in November of 2004, and thus using players listed in the USMNT pool at the time, rather than some of Arena’s more recent favorites (hence no Revs are featured). The player names listed do constitute a potential 4-4-2 lineup, although possibly not a workable one, as I was less concerned with whether someone plays right/left than whether or not his name had an easy English-language diminutive. You can’t really reduce Brian or Gregg very far, but I probably could’ve filled most of the lineup with Eddies and Stevies. Several of the names were obvious inclusions–Howard, Jones, Johnson–and some were a little tougher to slot. I wouldn’t mind re-doing this with a more recent roster selection. Appropriately enough for the Ramones theme, a high number of the names listed have some NY connection, either being from there originally or having spent some time as Metros.

The stitching was done in white for contrast, the top fastens with silver buttons, and the painting was deliberately left single coat to give a somewhat faded appearance. Finished size is 4’x6′.

Matt Reis Has a Posse

Based on the Andre the Giant stickers and variants beloved worldwide, I figured if anyone on the team would appreciate the joke, it’d be him. (He did–I got handed a signed pair of gloves before one match). This took about two hours one morning, all done with fabric paint, and there’s a stain from a coffee cup on it somewhere. Cotton, finished size is 4’x6′ (I think).

Spongebob Squarepants

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Tay-lor Twell-man!
Absorbent and yellow and scoring is he!
Tay-lor Twell-man!
If ball-handling nonsense be something ye wish
Tay-lor Twell-man!
I can’t think of a line that’s not about fish!
Tay-lor Twell-man! Tay-lor Twell-man! Tay-lor Twell-man! etc.

The chant didn’t much catch on, but the banner turned out well. Paint is almost all housepaint, with some fabric paint in the black and silver. Fabric is some weird poly blend I got for fifty cents a yard ’cause there’s this huge black streak on the reverse; it’s very stiff, weighs a ton and it’s kinda painful to touch for very long. Spongebob is indeed dressed as Twellman, complete with the same shoes, though why I didn’t include his trademark wrist wrap on his left hand escapes me. In the original mockup, Patrick was dressed as a GK, but at the last minute–and just after finding out what this year’s uniforms would look like–I decided to give him Noonan’s kit. I’m glad I did. Finished size is 5’x15′.

Cartman

First one we did, putting it together in August of 2004 for the September 4 World Cup qualifier against El Salvador. This was expensive and time consuming, as we did it using nylon flag cloth and fabric paint, not realizing that fabric paint and nylon don’t always get along very well–several areas, especially Cartman himself, had to be repainted. Finished size is 5’x30′.
