bulletproof

I’d had this design in mind for a while, and actually did a version of it that I had turned into a phone case. Decided to paint it to welcome him back from suspension, even if I did feel a little ticked off about the circumstances.

The fabric had to be dyed to suit, which took a few tries to get the right color. The dye process also shrank it considerably, which is why rather than being about 35″ wide and rectangular, it’s 30″ wide and trapezoidal. Instead of the Revs stock logo colors I use for the Words series, I used navy and red paints that more closely matched the uniform colors, and for the lettering, I used metallic paints. I’d like to work a little more with this design and with the general theme–perhaps an upgrade to the Words series–but mostly it was an exercise in playing with a design and some materials I wanted to try.

my mother has recommended I render you unconscious

Back at the US/Costa Rica WCQ, Andy Mead got a really awesome photo of Dolo wearing boxing gloves and biting the hem of a flag.

Obviously, it had to be a banner, and the caption just wrote itself. This and the Chuck D thing make me think I should do more early-90s rap themed work.

hey ho, let’s go, again

I don’t usually like to repeat banner ideas, but the guys at Small Bar in Chicago dropped me a line seeking something snazzy to decorate their bars during the World Cup. Threw in their logo, updated the roster with some more recent names (don’t care, keeping Conrad), and sent ’em off. Want to get a piece of the commission action? Just ask.

know your national team

This post’s a special case; it’s copypasta an adaptation of an intro to the 2010 US World Cup squad written for a forum I frequent. That’s why some of the material’s going to be familiar if you read this site often, and why I’m too lazy to scale down the images to fit this site’s template. So if you feel like reading an image-heavy guide to the USMNT and don’t mind the site body not matching the site header, then let’s crank the tunes and get to work.

with your hi-top sneakers and sailor tattoos

American Outlaws Rhode Island wanted a banner, so…

Another commission/collaboration with Kyle Lindsay. I’ve wanted to do a banner using old-school Sailor Jerry style tattoo artwork for some time now, and redrawing the Rhode Island state flag was the perfect opportunity. (Of course, we had to use the state’s full name). I’m in love with how the shading came out on this one and how bright the colors came out.

words, 2010, +1

Zach Schilawski, “Spark.” Ordinarily, it takes more than a month into the season for a rookie to state his case for a banner. Ordinarily, rookies don’t score 11-minute hat tricks on their home debut, however.

dream big

It so happened that at the opening of the 2010 season, I needed a replacement for the Stay Positive banner. Not because I’d retired it exactly when Ralston left; I’d actually intended to keep it around for a while. But I got to thinking about how the team had changed in the offseason, some ideas started coming to mind, and also some melonhead nagged me enough about it that I gave him the original banner.

Inspired by the message of a book my brother wrote, I did a new banner with a new theme for a team with a new look. Had to pester the Revs to find just the right photo for it, and it almost didn’t get done in time for the home opener.

The names might change, the players might change, but the heart’s still there.

words, 2010

Well, first word, anyway. If Cory Gibbs was enough of a known quantity for the Revs to let him substitute as captain right after joining the team, then that’s enough to earn a home debut banner.

“Rise” as in rise above, rise to the occasion, rise to the challenge of leading a team that’s had an unusually rough offseason. I’ve always liked the guy and I’m glad he’s a Rev.

so I heard you like banners

I was asked this week if I’d any plans to make a new Charlie Davies banner to take to South Africa and/or the send-off games.

I’m not sorry.

make a miracle, d, pump the lyrical

Back in October, a series of unpredictable events led to one of my most popular banners to date. I wondered what became of the banner after Jozy took it home that night, so I bugged him on Twitter for a while.

Turns out he gave it to Davies in the hospital. Awesome, I thought, that’s the best place for it.

Little did I know exactly what Davies did with it. In one of his first interviews after the accident, he called in to a Houston radio show, and was asked what he thought of the fan response to his injuries. “One of the first things I saw when I opened my eyes in the hospital was this painting someone did…”

day-umn

Once he returned to Twitter, I started pestering him, mostly because I’d kinda like him to work with me on t-shirts*. I wasn’t expecting a whole lot of direct responses; dude’s busy, after all, and when I bug players on Twitter it’s really just to make me and my buddies laugh.

He did get back to me, though. Not about shirts, but about something cooler.

So let’s see: A thing I did in about six hours at the last possible minute not only went viral among other fans, the players picked it up and ran with it (literally), then the player in the banner itself not only credited it as an inspiration in his recovery, but put it on display in his home. Did I mention it’s a player who almost died back in October and is now just about ready to play in the World Cup?

American soccer is the greatest.

*Those of you who’ve asked me to do a shirt of this banner, the reason I haven’t is twofold: I don’t own the specific photo I used for reference, and, because someone, you know, died in the car accident in question, I’d prefer not to profiteer. I’d really like to do shirts, but I want to do them right, and that means with full cooperation from the involved parties. I’d feel kinda creepy otherwise.
