blood + titanium

Early this spring, the gang at The Shin Guardian commissioned me to do a t-shirt in honor of Brian McBride’s finest hour, i.e. getting right back up against Italy with a face full of blood. Once McBride announced that he’d be retiring at the close of this season, those same folks at TSG sounded the call to make the 10/9 US-Poland game in Chicago a McBride tribute night. I wasn’t able to get out to Chicago for it, so I had my pal Fran from AO Boston shuttle a modified version of the t-shirt design to the game.

pay no attention to the font mismatch

This version adds “Thank you, Brian” and “The Shin Guardian + Tifosi 2010” to the bottom, and the lettering’s outlined in a metallic silver color–matching the titanium in McBride’s shatterproof face. It was a huge hassle to paint, because the colors required multiple coats over base coats to appear opaque over the red background. The next time I do a banner calling for a dark color background, I’ll just do it on white and fill in the rest with paint. Not only that, I kept painting over places that were supposed to be left red, namely the blood on his face, but that was fixed by covering with an opaque metallic blood red–it’s always nice when you can screw something up and it turns out better than if you hadn’t made the mistake at all.

Given to US Soccer to pass along to McBride, as far as I know.

ernest & julio gallows humor

Having sent cupcakes to the Revs in return for a difficult playoff run last year, I find myself wondering if this year, in honor of them missing the playoffs, I should deliver something more appropriate. I’m thinking Thunderbird.

red, white, and blue forever

I have very mixed feelings about this banner. Not the content, or the theme, or how it turned out, but exactly why I had to do it and when.

RED WHITE AND BLUE FOREVER

When Steve Ralston left the Revs at the beginning of the season to open up AC St. Louis, I was crushed, but understanding; even if it was bad news for the Revs, it was clearly good news for the guy. But then STL kinda, uh, didn’t do so hot, so the Revs brought him back when I was off in South Africa. Except then he immediately got hurt, and didn’t get a chance to play until Superliga, when suddenly word came down he was to retire to become Houston’s assistant coach. That’s okay, said the team, he’ll run out for one more game before calling it a night. Except then the league totally screwed that up, saying there was some paperwork they couldn’t clear in time, whatever, and it wound up that in a week the league was falling all over itself to bring in Thierry Henry, it completely blew a chance to honor one of the league’s all-time greats. The Revs announced they’d correct the problem and give him a proper tribute before the Houston game, at which he’d be present as their new assistant coach.

So I made a banner for the occasion. Finding the source image was one of the gloomier tasks I’ve done in the name of banner construction; I don’t think I need to explain why or how much it kills me he retired without an MLS Cup ring. Fabric’s purpose-dyed, and there’s a spot under the “k” where the salt from the dye mixture hit the fabric directly and kept the color from taking. The slogan is a play on both one of my favorite US chants and the Houston slogan of “forever orange”–whether he’s in orange now, or teal and purple for the Mutiny, or green and gold for STL–based on his contributions to the Revs and the US national team, he’s red, white, and blue forever.

american soccer revolutionary

When the Revs announced they’d be honoring Alexi Lalas before the 8/7 game vs DC, I knew I had to do a banner, but I also knew it had to be something that was an appropriate tribute to a guy whose career was and still is largely based on being American soccer’s greatest troll.

Fortunately, Lizz from the Revs office had the perfect source photo ready to go. Much as I would have liked to have used the photo of him from 2004 where he’s at a tailgate with some of my pals and they’re all giving the finger, the league tends to frown upon that kinda thing on camera. It was also important that we use a source photo of him from his playing days, i.e. with the hair and beard, as even today, that’s a lasting image of American soccer–I’m a big fan of the cartoons on Mediotiempo and every time they depict a generic US/MLS player, it’s this Tom Petty-lookin’ dude, all thanks to guess who. So we ran with this, which contains a caption referencing the Revolution above an image of a guy in Civil War getup holding a 50-star flag. One buddy told me I should add a space helmet to complete the ultra-anachronism.

Given to him after the game, as far as I know. UPDATE: Yes, it was; he sent me a thank you via email.

we went to South Africa: the megapost

If you’ve got the time to kill, here’s the entire 11,000+ word trip report in one gigantic post. It’s the same stuff in the other five South Africa entries, so if you’ve read those, there’s nothing new here–this is just one big link to hand out.

we went to South Africa: epilogue

This here’s the post with miscellaneous observations that didn’t fit into the rest of the trip report, or else I forgot to put them in. Half-assed discussion of social issues included.

we went to South Africa, part 3

When last we left, we’d spent another week in Johannesburg hanging around watching soccer games. Now it’s the time for the third part of the story, in which we decide it’s a good idea to go on safari with, among other people, these clowns.

we went to South Africa, part two

When last we left, we’d just spent our first week in Johannesburg, and were hitting the hay the night before the US-England match. Now, here’s the second part of our story, which is wordy as hell and involves an awful, awful lot of talking smack about the English.

we went to South Africa, part one

This is so long, I’m going to break it into three sections, which is a nice way of saying I want to get something or another up before the end of July. The photo gallery’s here, so follow along as you read about the first week of our trip.

I’ve been back from South Africa for about a week, and still have no idea when I’m going to finish captioning all 900 photos or writing up the trip report. In the meantime, here’re the mostly uncaptioned photos (broken into two sub-sections, in case you want more photos of us being jerks at soccer games than you do of nature and stuff), and here’re the answers to the top five questions I’ve heard about the trip:

1. All 3 US group games plus Netherlands-Denmark. We wanted to see Brazil-DPRK, but attempts to get tickets outside the stadium were for naught; more people were buying than selling, and the people who were selling were either too expensive, too sketchy, or both.

2. Got into Boston an hour before US-Ghana kickoff on Saturday and raced a guy with a Donovan shirt to a cab to get home. In the hurry, we left the bottles of duty-free Amarula that Mike bought in the cab. Feel like we kinda left on a high note, but the rest of the games have us feeling like we oughta stay the whole time in 2014.

3. The only bad things that happened to our extended party were things that would’ve happened to anyone at any WC. One pal had his wallet and phone lifted, and another took a nasty spill when she landed on the bottom of the post-Donovan crowd pile. Otherwise, the crime and danger factor was pretty low. There were definitely places we didn’t wanna stick around too long after sundown (like the neighborhood around Ellis Park) but not any points where we thought “GTFO NOW NOW NOW.”

4. The locals were all RIDICULOUSLY friendly and excited to have everyone come to visit. People would say “howzit” just for walking by, cars honked and waved if you were wearing team gear, and everyone would ask not only what you thought of SA but would you please tell your friends how nice it was there. And we mostly just stuck to Johannesburg, which, out of World Cup time, isn’t the hot tourist area. It was amazing how much people bent over backwards to help, from the random local lady who drove us into town to get our tickets after seeing we looked lost, to the gas station attendant in the middle of friggin’ nowhere who, when asked for directions to our safari camp, pulled out a Blackberry and grabbed a map instantly, to the caterers at the safari lodge who made sure I got meatless traditional fare, to the cab driver who stopped for ten minutes on our way out to the airport to let us grab last-minute souvenirs, Supermarket Sweep-style. I really don’t remember the last country I traveled to where people were just that damn welcoming.

5. Biggest fan group there? The ticket sales reports had it: USA. Massive, massive amount of Mexicans, too, and a lot of Hondurans. Many of whom, Hondurans especially, were there to wave two flags. We met people from just about everywhere except North Korea, obviously. Lots and lots of “hey who asked you” delegates, too, especially from South American countries. It’s the world’s biggest party, after all.
