logrolling in our time

Do not miss this interview with the Houston fan who did the Davies banner that Landy stole postgame. The line about doing a banner so you have a voice in the crowd sums it up perfectly.

Chuck D

The night before I flew down to DC for the US-Costa Rica game, word came that Charlie Davies was seriously injured in a car accident early that morning. Immediately, fans mobilized to get tributes to him set up for the game, and people asked me if I was going to do a banner. I initially declined, but then I remembered I had some leftover red fabric and a half-formed idea in my head about a Shep Fairey poster. So this happened. Took about six hours from Photoshop to finish. (And yes, as someone who’s more than passingly familiar with the works of Fairey, Davies, and Ridenhour, I knew what the pose might imply. The message here is to stand up and fight the good fight, whether that be for Davies to recover or his teammates to press on without him).

Then some dude in white absconded with the banner after the game.

I spent ten days before the US-CR game painting really elaborate banners, including two WWI posters, and it’s the one I pulled out of nearly thin air the night before that got all the attention. I just wish I’d been able to paint this one under happier circumstances.

If you want this on a t-shirt, I’m working on it–there’s some pretty blatant art theft going on, and I want to make sure everything’s done without getting me a C&D

The Midnight Rider

Third in a set of James Montgomery Flagg posters. This is another one for the US-Costa Rica game, and it’s huge (five feet wide by seven feet tall). The original combined incredibly well with a Mexican news photo from the US-Mexico game back in February. I love the hell out of this one–it’s dramatic and striking.

The guy in the photo is Kyle Lindsay. Yep, same one who thought up the Minuteman and Wario banners.

Help the Vuvuzebra

Second in a series of James Montgomery Flagg swipes. This one was painted for the US-Costa Rica game, and was given to US Soccer postgame. The Vuvuzebra’s a running joke from the summer’s Confederations Cup, and was a lot of fun to paint. That fabric was originally white, too; I had to dye it beige to get the right antique look.

However, the original has Uncle Sam with a horse, leading to an odd proportion problem–zebras are smaller than horses, so either this is a huge zebra, or Uncle Sam’s awfully short. I decided to split the difference and use Steve Cherundolo as the face model for Sam.

IT! HAS! BEGUN!

One of four banners I did just for the US-Costa Rica match that closed out the 2010 World Cup qualifying cycle. This one was quick and silly, a straight swipe from a Mitch Clem comic strip. Went home with some drunk dude who was next to me at the game, after Benny Feilhaber left it on the field.

Click for bigger: It’s not half-naked players in a champagne bath, but it does have a dumbass fan standing on a square car while talking on the phone.

stay positive

Two season-ending injuries just in time for the team to make a final playoff push. What to do?

Keep up the good fight, that’s what. I originally wanted to caption this “put a ring on it,” but that got a little too footieslash with the photo. Took me a while to figure out what the caption would be; tried and threw out a bunch of different options, ranging from “WIN IT FOR THEM” to “BROS B4 HOS” to “HEY Y’ALL THESE TWO GUYS ARE HURT BAD AND IT WOULD SUCK ROYALLY IF RALSTON HAD TO RETIRE WITHOUT WINNING A LEAGUE TITLE SO EVEN THOUGH SHALRIE’S PRETTY MUCH BEEN CARRYING THE TEAM SINCE APRIL COULD YOU PLEASE FIGHT THROUGH IT AND FINALLY WIN IT THIS YEAR EVEN WITH THE INJURIES AND ALL THAT? THAT WOULD BE COOL. TIA YR PAL HOOVER”

In the end, I went with the Hold Steady reference. ‘Cause it’s one thing to start with a positive jam, but it’s another thing to see it on through.

Minuteman

Another design from Kyle Lindsay, this one inspired by Minute Man National Historical Park.

Relatively simple design done on some fabric I had lying around the house; finished size is 9’x5′. The stars have a reflective layer applied. Best part of this one was painting it in Julie’s attic in 120 degree temperatures. Maybe someday I’ll get actual studio space…
